Most maple syrup companies use Diatomite to help filter their maple syrup. Diatomite, also known as diatomaceous earth, is the naturally occurring fossilized remains of diatoms. Diatoms are single-celled aquatic algae. They belong to the class of golden brown algae known as Bacillariophyceae. Diatomiteis a near pure sedimentary deposit consisting almost entirely of silica.
Defoamer: A defoamer or an anti-foaming agent is a chemical additive that reduces and hinders the formation of foam in industrial process liquids. Defoamer; primarily used to prevent foaming and boil-over when making maple syrup.
Here at New England Maple Products we do not use any of these products.
